Most people realize the benefits of maintaining a healthy diet and physical activity in all stages of their life, but few think about keeping their minds healthy as well. To achieve an overall balance, we all need to strive for both physical and mental wellness.
Statistics show that; 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness sometime in their life. For some, it may be stress (Yes, stress is a form of mental illness). Five of the top 10 illnesses contributing to disability or premature death are mental illnesses. Depression is the most prevalent and is expected to become the second most disabling illness by the year 2020.
Mental wellness is promoted through:
- Physical activity
- Good nutrition
- Adequate rest and sleep
- Stress reduction
- An optimistic attitude that can include humor, creativity and faith
- Optimal medication management
- Emotionally enriched environments
Check out an annual event in the greater Manchester community that promotes and celebrates mental wellness. Lite up the Nite Run/Walk for Mental Health 5k, held each June, is the only run/walk for mental health in the State of New Hampshire. Proceeds support wellness initiatives in the community.
