Annual Celebration

“Music & the Mind” Captivates Audience at 2005 Annual Celebration

An appreciative audience gave keynote speaker/performer, Dr. Richard Kogan, a sustained standing ovation at the conclusion of the 2005 Annual Celebration on October 24 th at the Wayfarer Inn and Convention Center. Dr. Kogan, a world-renowned concert pianist and a practicing psychiatrist in New York City, demonstrated his considerable skill in both fields in his presentation, entitled Music & the Mind, about noted 19 th century composer Robert Schumann.

He spoke about the composer in sensitive detail, describing both his creative talent and his lifelong struggle with serious mental illness. Several high points of the evening occurred when Dr Kogan played pieces from “Carnaval”, or one of the many love songs and other music created by the composer. His interpretation of the music was intense and beautiful – even awe-inspiring.

Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of our two annual awards to outstanding community leaders. The Community Leadership Award is presented by The Center’s Board of Directors to recognize outstanding citizens who make significant contributions towards building a healthy and caring community. The 2005 recipient was Attorney Eugene Van Loan III, a partner with the Wadleigh, Starr & Peters law firm. Mr. Van Loan has lent his considerable leadership skills to a wide range of community organizations and causes over the years, making New Hampshire a much better place to live. The award was presented by last year’s recipient, Dr Sylvio Dupuis.

The Wheelock-Nardi Advocacy Award is presented to individuals or organizations that demonstrate a high standard of commitment and advocacy to those affected by mental illness. This year the award was presented posthumously to Susan McLane, of Concord, who was a tireless and effective advocate for mental health, as well as other human service and environmental issues, during her 25 years in the NH Legislature. The award was presented by Major Wheelock and was accepted by Susan’s husband, Malcolm McLane, and other family members.
