2006 NH Mental Health Symposium Focuses on Autism

More than 100 health and education professionals from across the region recently attended the 2006 NH Mental Health Symposium held at The Derryfield in Manchester on Wednesday, June 7, 2006. The conference was presented by The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester in collaboration with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, as part of our ongoing commitment and leadership role in providing professional training and development opportunities which emphasize integration of the most current and best treatment practices in the field of behavioral health.

The focus of this year’s professional conference was Diagnostic Challenges with Autism Spectrum Disorders. It featured Peter E. Tanguay, MD, FACP, whose research has focused on autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Tanguay is the Spafford Ackerly Endowed Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (Emeritus) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Louisville. One goal of his work has been to develop practical ways in which teachers and clinicians can become more knowledgeable in the diagnosis, understanding, and treatment of persons with autism.

The conference offered up to 4.0 professional contact hours for physicians, nurses, social workers, mental health counselors and educators. Attendees represented mental health centers, public schools, universities, hospitals, private practice, developmental disabilities providers, state agencies, and a variety of organizations that serve clients within the autism spectrum.

When asked what was most helpful about the symposium, some participants responded:

  • Great presentation! I could have continued listening and learning more! Lots of helpful information.
  • The videos were helpful to display characteristics and/or treatments.
  • The correlation of information between autism and Asperger’s.
  • It put everything into perspective for me.
  • The discussion of effective treatment methods, current thoughts on appropriate diagnosis, and possible areas of research in the future.
